GTC Mid-Summer Update – July 26, 2023

Many thanks to Cathy Carson, the Junior Program Committee, and our two pros, Jared and Nico, for the awesome Junior Fun Day last Sunday.  Without the support of these volunteers, it would be impossible to provide such a great activity. Thank you also to our sponsors, Racquet Guys and the OTA, who provided prizes for the event.

August is going to be very busy at GTC.  Not only are camps continuing for juniors, Learn 2 Play lessons for adults, and STF match play for our A2 and C teams, but also we add the Singles and Doubles Club Tournaments, and the Awards Day Picnic.  The Facilities Team is going to make some improvements to the enclosure, and we have finally been approved for court repair and resurfacing!  This newsletter will tell you all the details, so keep reading!

The Club Singles Tournament begins on July 31 and includes the main draw and consolation draw for both Men and Women. All matches up to the semi-finals will be completed by August 10, and the finals will take place on August 12 (rain date Aug. 13).  Each player is guaranteed 2 matches.  The entry fee is $10 per player per event plus a tin of new balls, and there will be prizes for winners and runner-ups.  Register here by July 30 at the latest.

The Club Doubles Tournament begins August 13 and includes the main draw and consolation draw for Men, Ladies and Mixed.  All matches up to the semi-finals will be completed by August 24.  The finals will take place on August 26 (rain date August 27).  Each team is guaranteed 2 matches.  The entry fee is $20 per team per event and each team must supply a tin of new balls.  There will be prizes for winners and runner-ups.  Register here by August 10 at the latest.

Improvements to the Enclosure- Calling Strong and Fit Members to Build Sweat Equity in GTC!

Frasier would like a few volunteers to help with moving the storage shed.  Stage 1, August 12/13, is to prep a new landing pad for the shed in the south east corner of the enclosure.  He needs 4-5 people who can handle a shovel/rake to level the ground, spread the base layer and lay pavers in place.  If you are able to help, please send an email to fbellam@aol.com

Stage 2, August 19/20, is when we dismantle the shed, move the base, and re-erect the shed in its new location.  Again, 4-5 people are required.  If you are able to help, please send an email to fbellam@aol.com

Stage 3 is to put up a sun shade and create a more sociable gathering space for our club events.  The goal is to have this all ready for the Awards Day Picnic on August 26th.  Yes We Can!

Many hands make light work!  If you have worked on the windscreen crew, you know that Frasier will plan the work so that tasks are easy and fun to accomplish.  Please consider donating a few hours on one of these weekends.  We really need your help.

 Awards Day Picnic

Save the date – August 26!  This is when we plan to hold our annual picnic with drinks, burgers and sweet corn provided by the club; salads, desserts and snacks provided pot luck by YOU.  After the picnic, we will congratulate the tournament winners, present the Schachow Cup (player appreciation), Yeoman Award (volunteer service) and Goldring Trophy (outstanding junior) and distribute door prizes.  The fun will begin with doubles tournament finals in the morning, lunch at noon, and round robin play following the presentations. Registration will be on the website soon.

 Court Repair and Resurfacing

After much negotiating and weighing the merits of two different approaches, the city has decided to repair and resurface our courts this fall.  They will contribute $96 000 toward the cost, which is estimated at $123 000.  Our club reserves will fund the remainder.  The courts will be unavailable for play for about two weeks while this work is done – most likely in early September.  Much of the money for court surface maintenance comes from a fund established by the Scarborough Winter Tennis Club and managed by the Scarborough Tennis Federation in consultation with the city.  We are grateful for this support.

See you on the courts in August!  Let’s keep the ball in play.
